This chapter is about the founding of the fast food industry, Carl Jr.'s is explained the most in depth, and the people who founded them. Southern Cali had more cars then almost the rest of the country because of the millions people who moved into the region. Restaurants like Sonic that brought food to your car, but unlike sonic had a regular menu and served with silverware and dishes, were common in the area and the rest of the country. Two brothers decided to try a new business plan that involved cutting all staff that did not cook food, making people come get their own food, and making everything the same. The McDonald brothers plan was a success and their business plan was quickly copied by many people and many copy-cat businesses like Burger King, Wendy's, Taco Bell and KFC formed. The unique thing about this business is that none of the founders had anything in common other then the fact that they worked hard and started a restaurant. Not even all of them had graduated high school or even know how to run a restaurant but they rode theof fast food to success.

As the number of cars in our country increased, the interstate highway system was made and Americans came to value speed and cost over taste in there food, the fast food industry continued to grow into what it is today.

Today these companies are a great influence in the American perception of what food and meals are, for example McDonald's is now a family meal together and even some of the options are "healthy". The video Super-Size Me is famous for showing the many health risks that eating fast food has. It is known that most fast food options are unhealthy, but the cheap prices and convenience make it a favorable option for busy or lower income families. Also the sheer number of fast food restaurants is staggering, there are over 21,000 Sub-Ways and 14,000 McDonalds in the world, making them one of the most influential influences on what people eat. While some, like Sub Way, offer and promote mostly healthy choices others have mostly unhealthy burgers or tacos that are not good for you. While it may not be fair to completely blame fast food for America being fat they certainty played a part.
